Manitoba's heating season is one of the longest in southern Canada, and its heating market is split between natural gas and electricity. Boiler companies here often serve old Winnipeg housing with hydronic heat, rural customers with long-lived systems, and a growing share of heat pump work driven by active provincial programs. A buyer will want to understand that mix, and how much of your recent revenue came through programs that may not last.
We are a marketing and business consulting service for heating companies, not a contractor. We prepare the marketing and operating side of Manitoba boiler businesses for growth, succession or sale.
The Manitoba boiler market from a buyer's point of view
Statistics Canada reports that in 2023, 52% of Manitoba households used natural gas for their main heating system and 33% used electricity. Electric boilers are part of that electric share, alongside baseboards and furnaces, which creates boiler work that isn't gas-fired at all.
What a buyer will likely notice:
- Winnipeg's housing mix. Where a company's customers are concentrated in older homes and apartment buildings with hydronic heat, that base tends to produce repeat service and replacement work, and a buyer will want to see it in your records.
- Regional centres. Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler and Portage la Prairie each support local companies, with Thompson serving a much larger northern area.
- A long, very cold season. Demand is concentrated in winter and extends well into spring, which makes the company's ability to handle peak volume a real question.
- Program-driven conversions. Heat pump programs can shift work from boilers to other systems, or create combined projects.
What Manitoba buyers tend to ask
- How does revenue split between gas boilers, electric boilers, heat pumps and other work, and how has that changed?
- What share of recent work came through Efficiency Manitoba or federal programs?
- How large is the maintenance base, and does it include multi-unit buildings?
- Does the company have more than one person who can quote and manage large hydronic jobs?
- Who owns the company's listings, ad accounts and website?
The first two questions matter more here than in provinces with fewer programs. A company that can show the trend over three years, with program work clearly marked, answers them quickly.
Regulators to know (links only)
- Manitoba's Office of the Fire Commissioner, through its Inspection and Technical Services, handles gas and oil-burner permits and tradesperson licensing, boilers and pressure vessels, and electrician licensing.
- Apprenticeship Manitoba for trades certification.
- WCB Manitoba for workers' compensation, and the Manitoba Companies Office for business registration.
Check with the Office of the Fire Commissioner and your lawyer how licences and permits are affected by a sale. We summarise and link only.
Programs, as of October 2026
- Efficiency Manitoba's air source heat pump rebate lists $2,000 for a centrally ducted cold-climate unit and $1,500 for a ductless unit in existing primary homes.
- The Affordable Home Energy Program offers free heat pumps for qualifying electrically heated homes, including some with electric boilers; we could not re-confirm current eligibility details.
- Manitoba was the first province to sign a Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program agreement, announced in September 2025, delivered by Efficiency Manitoba for low- to median-income households.
- The federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability grant closed in Manitoba after 2026-07-31.
If your company does program work, record it separately. A buyer weighing the future will want to know how much of your revenue would remain if a program closed. Confirm current terms with each administrator before mentioning them.
How we'd prepare a Manitoba boiler company
- Report by system type and year. Gas boilers, electric boilers, heat pumps and other work, so the trend is visible.
- Mark program jobs. One field per job is enough.
- Document multi-unit accounts. Building managers and owners are valuable and concentrated; make sure they know your team.
- Show peak-season capacity. Records of response times and call handling in January and February are persuasive.
- Keep account changes for summer. The heating season here is long, so the window is short.
Our buyer-ready marketing data service covers the reporting, and the exit readiness timeline shows when to do each step. See the areas page for other provinces.
Frequently asked questions
Do heat pump programs threaten a Manitoba boiler business?
They change the mix of work rather than ending it. Many Manitoba homes still rely on gas or electric boilers, and some companies do both boiler and heat pump work. A buyer will want to see how your revenue splits and how it has shifted over time.
Is Winnipeg the whole market?
It is most of it, but Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler and Portage la Prairie support their own companies. If you serve several, report each one separately so a buyer can see where revenue really comes from.
Who licenses gas and boiler work in Manitoba?
The Office of the Fire Commissioner handles gas and oil burner permits and licences, boiler and pressure vessel inspection, and electrician licensing. Confirm with it, and your lawyer, how a sale affects licences and permits.
